In 1986, Carmen Jones’ life changed forever, while studying at Hampton University. Carmen and a group of friends were involved in a car accident during the Thanksgiving break, resulting her to become severely injured, and paralyzed from the waist down.
As a young woman who stood 5’10”, she was unable to fully comprehend what life would be like in a wheelchair. Broken and without hope, Carmen was not sure what to do, where to turn, or how to respond. All she knew to do was to ask God to help her and that He did.
Carmen went on to graduate from Hampton University, get married, become a mother and use her entrepreneurial skills to found a successful nationally-recognized business. One of her greatest accomplishments was to be able to serve in the Obama Administration.
However, in 2001, Carmen’s life took another unexpected turn and she gave birth to Marcus – a child with significant disabilities. During his first year, it was a day-to-day experience of wondering if he would live and over the course of his life, he underwent more than 20 surgeries. While Carmen’s life has been presented with significant challenges, God has provided grace, enduring faith, hope, love and resilience.
